Did you know that more than 30% of adults in the UK are unable to swim a length of a pool? Most are keen to learn, as learning to swim provides health, social and safety benefits.
Whether you are looking to get fit, try a gentle form of exercise that is easy on the joints, swim for social reasons or to set an example to your children, learning to swim is a fantastic activity which provides lifelong enjoyment!
I never learned to swim growing up, on holidays I envied other people being able to get up from their sun loungers - diving into the pool, doing a few lengths just to cool off. I thought one day I will be able to do that!
I actually started my swim journey just before Covid struck. My goal was to learn the breaststroke, the front crawl, and try a bit of diving. The breaststroke is coming along nicely but the front crawl is still a work in progress and have now tried diving from a kneeling position up at the deep end.
I have learned I'm not afraid of deep water and can jump in from the small springboard - touch the bottom of the pool come up and tread water.
Apart from the benefits of good exercise the time in the pool, improves my mental health and feeling of well being. Its always good to catch up with the rest of the class every week and indeed to see how their journey is moving along."
"Hi, I'm Ben, I am 48 and, I started to attend adult swimming lessons in October 2023 at Xcite Bathgate.
My main goal was to be able to float and eventually swim. My kids can swim and I did not want to be the dad who could not swim or play in the pool with his kids whilst on holiday.
I have learned how to tread water, swim freestyle and on my back. I’m currently learning to swim effectively and smoothly as well as practicing my breathing technique with my instructor Stephanie.
Due to an injury I’m unable to pursue my hobby - running, so swimming is the perfect way to keep fit. My favourite thing during the lesson is improving my skills from the last time.
We have a wonderful instructor who is very patient with us 'oldies' and encourages us throughout the lesson. I have come a long way and I am now able to swimming a full length.
I can recommend these classes to any adult who want to learn to swim, it is never too late to start!"
