    Due to the increasing popularity and development of our programme, Xcite at West Lothian Leisure are looking to grow our Learn to Swim Team to deliver lessons throughout West Lothian.     Xcite have been delivering the National Learn to Swim Framework in partnership with Scottish Swimming and Scottish Water since 2017 and currently deliver the full learn to swim pathway from Adult & Baby, all the way through to Pre-Club and Adult lessons.  Lessons are delivered at Xcite venues in Armadale, Bathgate, Broxburn, Livingston, Linlithgow and Whitburn, with more lessons launching at the new Winchburgh Sport and Wellbeing Hub.

    Both casual and contracted hours.  Please state your preference and availability on your application.

    Salary:  £16.09 per hour based upon being SSTQ qualified

Your role as a Swimming Teacher is to plan and deliver a comprehensive programme of swimming lessons and other activities to nationally recognised standards whilst working as part of a wider team to deliver excellent customer service.

Core Accountabilities & Responsibilities

  • Plan and implement a fun, safe and engaging programme of swimming lessons and aquatic skills, in line with Xcite’s Learn to Swim scheme of work.
  • Deliver swimming lessons to groups and individuals of various ages and ability.
  • Assess strengths and weaknesses in a participant's performance and identify areas for further development
  • Correct faults in techniques and identify ways to ensure progression
  • Communicate instructions and commands using clear, simple language
  • Encourage participants to gain and develop skills, knowledge and techniques
  • Maintain records of customer progress through continual assessment and communicate any changes effectively with the on site management team.
  • Respond quickly in emergency situations
  • Deliver excellent customer service, liaising with students and guardians to resolve complaints should they arise
  • Promote products and services to customers and visitors
  • Undertake general administrative tasks to support the delivery of programmes and services

  • Working to a high legal and ethical standard at all times, particularly in relation to issues such as child safeguarding and health and safety requirement
  • Attend training and development sessions, occasionally out-with your normal hours of work, to ensure your Health and Safety competence and your continuous professional development.

Essential Qualifications and Experience

  • A good ability to demonstrate the core competencies.
  • UKCC Level 2 in Teaching Aquatics or UKCC Level 1 in Teaching Aquatics and a willingness to obtain and apply knowledge/skills from the Level 2 qualification.
  • 2 standard grades or equivalent in Mathematics and English (or similar)
  • Hold or willingness to obtain and apply knowledge/skills from National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (Level 2) within first year of employment.
  • Competent level of skill with Excel, Word.
  • Suitable and sufficient experience of swimming teaching of children and adults.
  • Willingness to continuously develop and attend training and development sessions in line with your personal training plan, on occasion out-with your normal hours of work, to ensure the required level of competence.

Desirable Qualifications and Experience

  • Hold and maintain a recognised Aquafit qualification.
  • A working knowledge of Health and Safety responsibilities in a swimming pool environment.
  • Hold and maintain a recognised First Aid at Work qualification.
  • A working knowledge/willingness to learn about the Charity’s policies and procedures/products and services.
  • Early Years Swim Teacher Qualification (SVQ Level 3).
  • Recreational or club swimming background.

Job Dimensions

  • Will often work in hot, humid and noisy conditions.
  • Required to undertake the mentoring process of Level 1 Teachers
  • You will be required to be aware of current Health and Safety Policy and to take responsibility for your own safety and the safety of others who may be affected by your acts or omissions at work.

Additional information

  • This position is subject to a Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme check.
  • Required to maintain swimming teachers license
  • Hours will are likely to include evenings and weekend working
