Super Splash Saturday proves huge success!

Olympic, World and European 100m swimming medallist Duncan Scott recently attended Super Splash Saturday in an effort to inspire sporting stars of the future throughout West Lothian. The event which took place on Sunday 18 November at Xcite Bathgate proved a hugely popular event with over 150 local people joining in the fun and kick starting their sporting journeys. Super Splash Saturday offered a fantastic opportunity for keen swimmers, no matter their age, to meet the Olympian, ask questions and get inspired to be more active and achieve their sporting dreams.

A variety of exciting activities ran throughout the day, including free taster sessions for 8-15 year olds ranging from rookie lifeguard, water polo, inflatable pool party to adults skills and drills. Additionally, Duncan held two master class session with the winners of the Design a Swim Cap competition and spectators were able to enjoy a swim display by the Olympian and Swim West Lothian.

As an ambassador for Scottish Swimming’s learn 2 swim programme, Duncan was able to share his experiences and shine a light on the hard work, determination and fighting spirit needed to succeed. Xcite West Lothian in partnership with Scottish Swimming’s Learn 2 Swim programme hosted and organised the event, which aimed to promote the new national framework for swimming lessons. The new and improved Learn to Swim framework will enable teachers to plan, deliver and assess your child as he/she progresses through the programme to a recognised national standard. It is designed to produce swimmers that are ‘ready for lifelong swimming’ or depending on their ambitions are ‘club ready’.

The Xcite Swim team and Scottish Swimming were on hand throughout the day to encourage young swimmers to ask questions and get involved. Information was also available on a variety of Xcite programmes including swimming lessons and water activities. Local Swim Clubs came along and shared their club info also at a number of stalls.

Robin Strang CEO of Xcite West Lothian Leisure said ‘We are delighted to be in partnership with Scottish Swimming and are grateful for Duncan Scott taking the time out of his busy training schedule to come along to today’s event to launch the learn to swim framework. It was a fantastic afternoon, highlights being some of Swim West Lothian’s top swimmers challenging Duncan to a race and Duncan in the hot seat being asked questions from local Primary school children. Tougher than Question Time! ”.
