Care providers from across West Lothian came together for a thrilling afternoon of friendly competition and sporting challenges at the Xcite Ageing Well Care Activity Network (CAN) 'Canalympics' games held at Xcite Craigswood.

Organised by the Xcite Ageing Well team and supported by CAN and SMILE, the event saw 11 teams from local care homes and care providers showcase their skills, enthusiasm and sportsmanship.

The teams engaged in various exciting challenges, including New Age Kurling, penalty shootouts, hook a duck, and even sock pairing.  A dedicated team of volunteers, including 15 West Lothian College students and 30 Xcite Ageing Well volunteers, offered their assistance throughout the day.

The event concluded with a celebratory award ceremony, where the winning teams were recognized for their achievements. Among the standout performances, notable winners included; Holmesview Nursing Home who were first place in the parachute games; Meadowvale Nursing Home who took first place for Kurling and overall second place; and Whitdale Nursing Home who took the gold for the sock pairing event, a prize for the best team flag and placed third in the overall event.

The 2023 overall champions were Mansewood Court from Whitburn who were delighted to take home the prestigious trophy.

Following the excitement of the award ceremony, participants had the opportunity to socialise and enjoy a tea dance celebration, concluding the afternoon on a high note with refreshments provided by the West Lothian Tesco community champions.

Speaking of the event, Avril Clerkson, Xcite Ageing Well Development Officer, commented, "The Canalympics event is always a highlight in our calendar, and this year was no exception. I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the exceptional team of volunteers and the care activity co-ordinators whose dedication and support make this event such a success year after year."

"Congratulations to Mansewood Court for their well-deserved title as our 2023 overall champions. It was a fantastic day and I hope everyone had an incredible time."
