West Lothian Leisure is a Community Benefit Organisation, a registered Scottish charity.  It is at the heart of the West Lothian community, helping people to improve their wellbeing and make healthy lifestyle choices.  We care passionately about the service we provide to the people who live, work and visit West Lothian.  As a valued organisation that understands, cares about and engages with its community, we are the delivery partner of choice for West Lothian organisations responsible for improving people’s lives through sport, health and physical activity, outdoor education and culture. 

Job Purpose – overview 

Your role will be to lead the creation, development, and implementation of the organisations fundraising plan over 3 years, to attract external funding that significantly exceeds current levels.   

You will represent the organisation in maintaining current (funding) partnerships whilst supporting the development of new strategic/corporate partnerships with those who are aligned with our vision of more people in West Lothian living a healthier, happier and longer life. 

You will need to create compelling and successful fundraising applications aimed at  a variety of sources, including; grant giving bodies (trusts and foundations), statutory bodies, national agencies, lotteries, corporate trusts, strategic funding partners, corporate donors, online giving and employee fundraising.  

You will develop innovative campaigns to maximise donations from our membership and customer database. 

You will also take the lead role to ensure there are suitable and effective monitoring and evaluation processes in place to evidence the impact of West Lothian Leisure’s work, promote our charitable purpose, and position West Lothian Leisure as the ‘go to’ organisation as the partner of choice. 

Core Accountabilities & Responsibilities 

  • Create, develop and implement the Fundraising Plan to achieve revenue targets, from a range of  funding sources.   
  • Horizon scan, identify and pursue funding sources, policy changes, partnership opportunities and other developments that offer investment potential 
  • Create, develop and write compelling fundraising applications, cases for support and business proposals to secure funding 
  • Develop and maintain an understanding of where funding gaps and opportunities exist within Health and Wellbeing, and throughout our wider work 
  • Plan up to 3 years ahead, for sustainability of funded projects through knowing details of funding, expiration points, staffing implications and matching this with/seeking out funding opportunities 
  • Develop and implement new methods of fundraising including online fundraising, high net worth individuals (HNWI), corporate donors, giftaid, customer donations and employee fundraising 
  • Maintain existing and develop new corporate partnerships to increase; corporate social responsibility, funding and sponsorship opportunities 
  • Maintain records of all funding activities e.g. applications  
  • Develop strong internal and external relationships to maximise effectiveness  
  • Build strong internal relationships with colleagues to explore, design and define funding concepts. 
  • Liaise with colleagues across the organisation to gather project information, case studies, updates and budgetary information for inclusion in proposals. 
  • Develop and maintain a strong network of funding agency key contacts  
  • Maintain an up to date bank of cases for support and project funding needs for use in applications, reports and correspondence. 
  • Lead the implementation of monitoring and evaluation methods across a range of funded projects to maximise the opportunity for continued and new investments  
  • Create and develop meaningful monitoring and evaluation practices and embed the use of tools, techniques and systems that cements good practice  
  • Write reports for internal and external communication on the performance and impact of our funded projects 
  • Ensure industry standards such as the SROI principles and the UK Government Treasury Green Book guidelines are adhered to where appropriate  
  • Manage and initiate partnerships with external organisations e.g. higher education institutions, professional associations, to use research and further develop our understanding of the impact of our programmes 
  •  Grow West Lothian Leisure’s reputation as an organisation that improves lives and raise awareness of our charitable purpose.   
  • Achieve recognition for funded projects by identifying and making quality nominations for national and local awards. 
  • Showcase the impact funded projects make through West Lothian Leisure engagement activities. 
  • Identify and promote success stories to PR/Marketing for internal and external communication (website, social media, member communication, media releases, etc). 
  • Maintain a positive awareness amongst colleagues, partners, funders, Board Members and other stakeholders of the positive impact of West Lothian Leisure’s work. 
  • Drive awareness of West Lothian Leisure’s funded work and its impact in the Third Sector by making presentations and attending networking events. 
  • Lead and support colleagues across the organisation to build and retain positive relationships with existing funders (and prospect funders) to maximise income for West Lothian Leisure. 
  • Develop a database of key partners and prospect stakeholders, and use a CRM tool to ensure meaningful contact activities are developed/delivered.   
  • With project leads, ensure funders receive the highest standard of donor care to build long-term partnerships.  
  • Monitor compliance of contractual obligations and ensure these are being achieved. 
  • Ensure funders support is acknowledged on project materials, online and in the annual accounts. 
  • Involve funders in engagement activities that showcase our work and promote West Lothian Leisure’s charitable purpose. 
  • Build and maintain an active database of prospect funders, and develop a pipeline of funding opportunities to create clear and compelling presentations; win hearts and minds to secure new partnerships.

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent 
  • Track record of achieving charitable funding goals/targets and business goals/targets 
  • Establishing beneficial corporate partnerships  
  • Effective use of monitoring & evaluation processes 
  • Post-graduate qualification in, health and well-being, charity or fundraising related discipline 
  • Project Management Qualification (such as Prince2 or APMP) 
  • Accredited (or working towards) SROI Practitioner (or similar)

  • Experienced in securing financial and in-kind investment 
  • Knowledgeable in a number of fundraising disciplines 
  • Knows where and how to access information on best practice in fundraising 
  • Experienced in developing effective working relationships and networks, internally and externally  
  • Knowledge, understanding and experience of setting, measuring & reporting on outcomes 
  • Knowledgeable of innovative fundraising practice and methods 
  • Experience of public/third sector and partnership arrangements
