The Ageing Well project promotes healthy lifestyles for adults over 50 in West Lothian. The Changing Lifestyle Project is part-funded by NHS, West Lothian Leisure Xcite and West Lothian Council. The project is a Lothian wide initiative and is part of the UK Ageing Well network. It aims to increase the expectation of good health in later life with activities that improve physical health, mental health and wellbeing. The emphasis is on meeting new people and making physical activity accessible and enjoyable.

Ageing Well West Lothian at WLL Xcite has over 17 years of successfully making a significant difference to the lives of those who regularly attend our activities. Volunteers and the Xcite Team help to achieve this by encouraging and supporting participation in physical activity such as walks, dancing, exercise, singing, cycle skills, indoor curling, knitting and swimming.

33,456 people took part in our Ageing Well activities in the last year!

Activities include:

• DANCE classes - Fit Steps and Line Dancing.
• SPORTS - Indoor Kurling, Walking Football and Walking Netball
• FITNESS classes - Tai Chi and Seated Exercise and Paracise
• POOL - Buddy Swimming.
• SOCIAL - Walking Groups, Knit & Natter, Singing for Health and Arts & Crafts.

Partnerships and Local Groups

The project works in partnership with a number of Organisations such as West Lothian Care Activity Network, Age Scotland, OPAL, Craigshill Good neighbour network, Put Your West Foot Forward, West Lothian Volunteer Network, Paths for All and Alzheimer’s Scotland.

We also link in with other community groups and service providers to help bring these activities to different locations throughout West Lothian such as Generation Arts, Carers of West Lothian, Food Train, Day Care Centres, Real Life Options, Pathways, Bield Housing, Linlithgow Link, Friendship groups and 50+ network groups.

Want to Volunteer?

You can make a real difference in people’s lives within your local community by becoming an Ageing Well volunteer!

Ageing Well Volunteer, Maureen says:

First of all, there is the social aspect of meeting other people and helping them. There is nothing more pleasing and satisfying than being given a lovely smile and even a 'high five' at the end of a social with care home residents. Secondly, is the aspect that you are helping yourself to a fitter lifestyle, for example being the leader of my walking group leads me to walk in the fresh air and discovering and visiting places that you would not do on your own. Lastly being a volunteer working under the guidance of Avril Clerkson has given me the opportunity of giving people confidence and losing the fear of water in my Buddy Swimming group.”
