Glasgow Caledonian University hosted Scotland’s first Sporting Senior Games on 19 September 2015, which was organised in collaboration with charity Erskine and the Institute for Geri Olympics and Active Living in West Virginia. The fun day of exercise and activity was sponsored by Xcite and organised by Dawn Skelton, Professor in Ageing and Health at Glasgow Caledonian University.
West Lothian Care Activity Network was invited to take part and two teams from West Lothian Care settings travelled to Glasgow to compete in the event. Competitors took park in a series of events including Wheelchair Obstacle, Boccia, Basketball, Static Cycle, Tossing the Sheep and Throwing the Welly.
Professor Skelton of Glasgow Caledonian University said:
"Being as active as possible whenever possible is a message for everyone, but particularly important for people living in care homes. The Sporting Senior Games, which we hope to make a yearly event, aims to increase awareness of the fun of friendly competition even at
Team 2 West Lothian won silver medal and Liz MacKenzie from Mansewood Court won a gold medal in the exer-game activity.

Xcite Livingston and West Lothian College are warning students to steer clear of walking by or entering water when under the influence of alcohol.
The Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK), the drowning prevention charity, launched its annual Don’t Drink and Drown campaign to warn those on a night out to act responsibly near water after they have been drinking, and to make sure they avoid walking home near water.
Research indicates that around a quarter of all adult drowning victims have alcohol in their bloodstream.*
Along with host of social media awareness posts with the hashtag #dontdrinkanddrown, and posters and beermats, RLSS UK has also launched a short, powerful awareness film which is hoped to be shared through social media channels.
Xcite Livingston invited 40 West Lothian College students along to participate in two 3 hour sessions that included:
• A presentation on the dangers of being in and around water
The Don’t Drink and Drown initiative will see posters being promoted throughout the West Lothian College plasma screens and across Xcite social media sites.
Graeme Mair from West Lothian College said:
“We feel this has been a great opportunity to raise awareness for such an important issue, the students have gained both knowledge and an understanding of the seriousness of being around water.”
Di Steer, RLSS UK Chief Executive said:
“People die each year after entering the water with alcohol in their bloodstream, either deliberately or completely by accident. Drinking near or in water can be dangerous and a deadly cocktail. Alcohol can seriously impede your ability to survive in water.
At the drowning prevention charity we work hard to inform and educate people of the dangers and advise the public to never go into water when you have been drinking and always take care and be aware if you are near water.
When walking home from a night out, avoid routes that are alongside water, particularly in the darkness, and always say with and look out for your friends.”

NEW GYM opening in October!
A NEW Gym has been added to our popular venue - Xcite Linlithgow. The project started earlier this year and Phase 1 of the development sees the completion of a new gym area, double the size of the previous gym, and the addition of a new fitness class studio. We are excited to announce the opening date will be mid October 2015 - keep an eye on our social media for launch date!
Xcite Linlithgow existing gym customers will be able to use the gym as soon as it opens, there is no need to book an Xcite Review. However we will be able operating Group Tours for the new funtional training kit like TRX and OMINA 860. We encourage all customers to come in for a visit and take a tour!
So how does it look? The delight is the vast space of the new modern Gym area and the amount of kit it includes. Leading industry equipment by Technogym is presented in a well laid out floor plan with a great mix of cardiovascular and resistant weights. The flood of natural light and view, provided by the tall slim windows and transparent high border around the building, allows you to workout in an environment that feels as much outside as it does in without any loss of privacy.
The increase in popularity for free weights training is not ignored and becomes the heart of the whole gym, centrally placed with easy access for all and includes more racks, platforms, benches, dumbbells and cables. The surprise is the dedicated functional training studio, FTS, to the left of the gym that houses a Queenax Frame for TRX suspension training and an OMINA 8 for multi station functional training.
The addition of the large Fitness Studio benefits the venue's already successful timetable and the studio total to 2, with plans to increase this to 4 next year. Fitness Classes run daily and include well known Les Mills classes, Cycle, Kettlercise and many more. New car parking has been installed and the new 150 spaces brings the total to 275.
The project will move onto Phase 2 and is due to be completed in early 2016. Phase 2 works include the renovation to the previous gym and changing facilities. The old gym will be renovated into 2 Multi Functional Studios for fitness classes and kids parties. The changing facilities are undergoing a complete make over and there will be temporary changing facilities provide during this time (from early October – early 2016). The favoured café area will also be extended.
Robin Strang, Xcite's Chief Executive said "It's fantastic to see the near completion of Phase 1 of the project. We have been able to put into place what our customers wanted by listening to their feedback. This includes the increase to types of equipment available and addition of the fitness class studios. We are excited to be opening our doors in a few weeks time. We hope that the build will be well received by the Linlithgow community and Xcite customers who have continually given their support through the challenges of Phase 1 of the project."

We have had a lot of feedback from customers asking why the new extended car parking @ Xcite Linlithgow has not yet opened.
The car park has not yet been signed off by Building Control. We are awaiting specific lighting to arrive and be installed before the new section can be used by customers.
We had hoped that this would be completed sooner than it has, and it is likely the access to this section will be from the 12 October (still tbc).

Gym - Getting Started
Going to the gym for the first time can be daunting. There really is no need to worry or be nervous. The Xcite Team are here to welcome you and take you through steps to get you started, whatever your fitness level or experience.
Before you can use any of our Gyms you will be required to complete an induction - Xcite Welcome!
This is your 1st appointment at the Gym. Your Gym Instructor will take you through a 30mins 1-2-1 session to get you started in the gym confidently. You'll be shown how to use the equipment safely and effectively and discuss your fitness goals. Xcite Welcome is included in our Membership package.
Even if you are an experienced Gym user or a previous member you will be required to complete this 30mins session.
It is a great opportunity to have 1-2-1 time with an experienced Fitness Professional. Whatever your fitness level or gym experience you'll be able to discuss your aims and goals and get advise and tips from your Gym Instructor.
After completing your Welcome session you can opt to choose further options to enhance your technique, knowledge, and experience as well as varing types of equipment you use in the gym. These are all 30mins sessions.

Assess results and update programme. We recommend you book a Review every 6 weeks to update your programme so you continue to get results.
