17/05/2012 14:14 Care activities go the distance in West Lothian

Olympic Games fever is well and truly on track in West Lothian after it was announced that the second Care Activity Network (CAN) event is being held at Xcite West Lothian Leisure's Broxburn Sports Centre from 1pm –3pm on Wednesday 23 May.

The event "GOING FOR GOLD" supported by West Lothian Community Health and Care Partnership (CHCP), West Lothian Care Activity Network (CAN) and Xcite West Lothian Leisure's Ageing Well project brings together care settings from across West Lothian in a mass participation, competitive event which aims to increase physical activity levels. The event is also supported by Ageing Well volunteers, Tesco, British Red Cross, Domiciliary team at St Johns and the local Community Police. Residents have been practicing for weeks and are ready to take each other on in a culmination of all their hard work.

The teams will be piped into the arena bearing homemade flags and Kirkhill Primary School, Broxburn pupils will be singing to open the event.

Broxburn already has links to the world's greatest sporting event with the Olympic Torch Relay visiting the town on Wednesday 13 June, when West Lothian residents are being invited to come along and join the party.? A street event is being organised in East Main Street from 4pm with stalls, Radio Grapevine, a parade, and lots of family fun.

Theresa Douglas, Chair of West Lothian Community Health and Care Partnership (CHCP), said: "Last year's event was a huge triumph and everyone involved thoroughly enjoyed themselves. It proved that, with the right supports and encouragement,?everyone?can be physically active in ways which benefit?their health and wellbeing. So, with the Olympic torch visit to West Lothian also on the horizon, we?want to encourage everyone to?get active and have fun."
